Course Selection

Year 1 (usually Medical Sciences 1)

Students begining their studies at Western in September 2014:

The courses required in Year 1 and 2 for admission to Year 3 of the modules leading to a BMSc degree are outlined, in general, in the Medical sciences first entry program.  These Admission Requirements include both 1000-level (first-year) and 2000-level courses, since admission to modules leading to BMSc degrees will not occur until Year 3 for these students.  For students with IB or AP credits please see Admission to year 1 for more information.

Year 1 Course Selection

Students registering in first-year programs must choose courses that fulfill the basic requirement of 5.0 courses numbered 1000-1999. The 5.0 courses must include at least four different subjects with no more than 2.0 courses in one subject area. Additionally, students must include 1.0 course from each of two of the three categories (A, B, and C) to meet the first-year Breadth Requirement

Course selection for Year 1 is generally the same for most modules in the BMSc Program, however, there are a few exceptions.  All modules in Medical Biophysics modules require 1.0 courses in Calculus. It is important to look at the Admission Requirements for the module(s) of interest in the Academic Calendar. This  Year 1 Course Selection chart summarizes which course should be taken in first year in addition to 1.0 course from either Category A or B.

Please note that the 1.0 Physics requirement can be deferred to Year 2 but it is strongly recommended that these courses be completed in Year 1 to avoid a heavy course load in Year 2 and potential timetabling issues.

The following document was distributed during Summer Academic Orientation (SAO) to incoming Medical Sciences 1 students:

Students Entering Year 2

As outlined in Admission to the bachelor of medical sciences program in the Academic Calendar, Medical Sciences 1 students must complete ALL the Admission Requirements (both 1000- and 2000-level courses) for the module(s) to which they apply for Year 3 BMSc to maintain assured admission to Year 3 BMSc.  Students who are not registered in Medical Sciences 2 may apply for admission to Year 3 BMSc from the competitive pool and should review Admission to the bachelor of medical sciences program to determine which courses, minimum marks and averages that are required in Year 2.

2000-Level Admission Requirements

are found in the Academic Calendar for each of the modules that lead to graduation with a BMSc degree.  We've taken this information from theAcademic Calendar and posted it in handy charts so that you can see the Admission Requirements for all modules at once:

Weighted Averages Chart

The Weighted Averages Chart indicates which courses must be completed before admission to Year 4 of each of the Honors Specialization modules leading to a BMSc degree, and the manner in which the courses are weighted.
