In Memoriam: Dr. John Sangster

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of Dr. John Sangster, Professor Emeritus, Family Medicine.

Dr. Sangster passed away on March 18, 2022.

A well-known and highly respected clinician in London, Ont., Dr. Sangster was a pillar of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Family Medicine Department who championed excellence in education.

After completing residency training at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1970, he practised family medicine for more than 40 years and served as Medical Director at the Byron Family Medical Centre for 18 years beginning in 1978.

In 1984, Dr. Sangster completed the Master of Clinical Science in Family Medicine program and shortly after was appointed Director of the Graduate Studies Program in Family Medicine, a role he would serve in for 18 years.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sangster mentored countless medical students and residents in Family Medicine. He has been recognized with numerous awards and honours, including the Western Family Medicine Dr. Ian McWhinney Teaching Award, the Western University Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education and being named Family Physician of the Year for Region 2 by the Ontario College of Family Physicians. He also served as Chair of the Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario (AMOSO).

Dr. Sangster was also known for his generosity and inclusivity. He created the J.F. Sangster Graduate Studies Family Medicine Award, with a vision of contributing to the preservation of comprehensive family medicine in clinical practice and supporting research within the Graduate Studies Program.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday, March 24 at 1 p.m. More information will be available from Westview Funeral Chapel.
