Announcement: Dr. Michael Ott appointed interim Chair/Chief, Department of Oncology

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Ott has been appointed interim Chair/Chief, Department of Oncology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, effective January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022 or until a permanent Chair/Chief is appointed.
 
Dr. Ott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery with a cross-appointment to the Department of Oncology at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He has served as the Program Director for Surgical Foundations and since 2012 as the Program Director for the General Surgery residency-training program.
 
Dr. Michael Ott obtained his medical degree and completed his residency in general surgery at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. Following residency, he completed fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic, Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Centre, Michigan State University. Dr. Ott has also completed the Masters of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Harvard Surgical Leadership Program, Harvard University.
 
He has contributed nationally as a member of the Board of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons and the Chair of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Post-Graduate Education Committee. He sits on the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery Continuing Education Committee and the Operative Competence Committee. He has participated as a member of the Royal College specialty Committee exam board and accreditation teams. He contributed to the Pan-Canadian Standards for Rectal Cancer Surgery with the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and since 2008 has been the Cancer Care Ontario Regional Champion.
 
Dr. Ott has received numerous awards, including the Schulich Award of Excellence in Graduate/Postgraduate Education; General Surgery Resident Mentor Award; the JH Duff Teacher of the Year Award; the Top 10 Capstone Project, Harvard Surgical Leadership Program; The Best MHPE Thesis Award, The University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Award of Academic Excellence, Division of Surgical Oncology, Department of Oncology. He was also nominated as the Program Director of the Year Award, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
 
During this period of interim leadership, Dr. Ott looks forward to working collaboratively to best support clinical and departmental operations and to promote excellence in both clinical care and scholarship within the Department.
