Announcement: Dr. Luciano Sposato re-appointed as The Kathleen & Dr. Henry Barnett Chair in Stroke Research

I am pleased to announce Dr. Luciano Sposato has been re-appointed The Kathleen & Dr. Henry Barnett Chair in Stroke Research, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective February 1, 2022 to January 31, 2027.

Dr. Luciano Sposato is a Professor of Neurology and Head of the Stroke Program at the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. He is a stroke neurologist and clinician-researcher, with cross-appointments in the Departments of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Anatomy and Cell Biology. Additionally, Dr. Sposato is the Director of the Heart & Brain Lab at Western University, an Associate Scientist at Robarts Research Institute, and Adjunct Scientist at Lawson Health Research Institute.

In 1993, Dr. Sposato earned a medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. Subsequently, he served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine (1997) and Neurology (2003) at the University of Buenos Aires. In 2007, he earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the IAE Business School.

Dr. Sposato’s research focuses on the brain and heart connection. He leads a multidisciplinary and translational research program involving epidemiological, clinical, and experimental studies. Among his most impactful contributions, he described the clinical and pathophysiological concept of atrial fibrillation detected after stroke and the pathophysiological process leading to cardiovascular complications in stroke patients, called stroke-induced heart injury.

Dr. Sposato is the Inaugural Chair of the World Stroke Organization’s Brain & Heart Task Force. He holds several editorial roles in leading peer-reviewed journals in the field of stroke and cardiology.
