In Memoriam: Dr. Robert Murray

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert Murray, former Head, Department of Bacteriology and Immunology. 

Dr. Murray passed away on February 18, 2022 at the age of 102.

A lifelong microbiologist, Dr. Murray was known for his research on bacterial structure and pathology. He served as Head of the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology (later Microbiology and Immunology) from 1949 to 1974. As Head of the Department, he established electron microscopy in 1954 and built an international reputation for bacterial research.

Dr. Murray received numerous honours throughout his career, including being named Officer of the Order of Canada and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

After his retirement in 1984, he continued to be active as a Professor Emeritus.

At his family’s request, a contribution may be made to the RGE Murray Graduate Scholarship Fund in Microbiology and Immunology or to a chosen charity.
