Announcement: Dr. Scott McKay appointed Chair/Chief of the Department of Family Medicine

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Scott McKay has been appointed as the Chair/Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University effective February 1, 2022 to March 31, 2027.

Dr. McKay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and has been a faculty member in the Department since 2004. He is the Chair of the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) Medical Advisory Committee. He also currently serves as the Associate Chief for Family Medicine at LHSC, as well as the Undergraduate Education Director for the Department of Family Medicine. Until recently, Dr. McKay was the Associate Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, completing his second term in this role in June 2021.

Dr. McKay obtained his Doctor in Medicine in 2002 and his residency at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He holds a certificate of added competence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in Care of the Elderly. Dr. McKay recently completed a Masters of Business Administration Certificate (Physician Business Leadership Program) through the Executive Education Centre, Schulich School of Business, York University.

Dr. McKay has been a front-line family physician for almost 20 years providing cradle to grave, comprehensive care. Since 2008, Dr. McKay has worked at the Byron Family Medical Centre in London where he served as a Clinical Team Leader and the Assistant Centre Director from 2008 to 2019. His other leadership roles have included being a Primary Care Co-Lead for the Southwest Local Health Integration Network and the Physician Quality Lead for the Thames Valley Health Team. Additionally, Dr. McKay served on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer Society London & Middlesex from 2016 to 2021 where he received the Jan Greene Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in 2020. Currently, he is an Executive Council Member of the London-Middlesex Primary Care Alliance.

Dr. McKay’s teaching and academic focus is in Quality Improvement. He designed and delivers a unique Undergraduate Medical Education curriculum in Quality Improvement. In 2017, Dr. McKay was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Canadian Association for Medical Education, as well as an Award of Excellence from The College of Family Physicians Canada for his work in medical education and quality improvement.
