Funding: Three research teams receive funding for education research

Three research teams have received funding from the Faculty Support for Research in Education (FRSE) program.

FSRE grants facilitate and enable scholarship in education at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. These grants support projects with the potential to improve the state of knowledge and inform educational practice or curriculum.

With the funding, Greta Bauer, PhD, is evaluating the delivery of sexual and gender minority content in medical education programs across Canada.

Dr. Robin Mackin, Paediatrics, will be exploring resident and faculty perceptions of coaching after enrollment in a longitudinal coaching program.

“The translation of coaching principles into the field of medicine is a relatively new and important area of research,” she said. “I’m passionate about medical education research because it informs our training programs, curriculum and learning environments so that we can develop excellent health care providers for the benefit of our society,” she said.

Mary Ott, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow with the Centre for Education Research & Innovation (CERI), is focused on the transition to competency-based medical education (CBME). Her research project addresses the hidden work and workarounds required to design and implement Entrustable Professional Activities as learning and assessment practices in postgraduate medical education.

“As a teacher myself, I know first-hand that educators never just deliver curriculum, they are curriculum designers responsible for translating theory to practice,” she said. “This research has the potential to influence how educators and institutions conceptualize and implement CBME, nationally and internationally.”
