Awards: Honouring excellence in the History of Medicine

Congratulations to Schulich Medicine & Dentistry students, Kishor Johnson, Melissa Chopcian, Jelena Poleksic and Jacob Wihlidal, recipients of the 2020 prizes honouring excellence in the History of Medicine.

Kishor Johnson, Medicine Class of 2020, is this year’s recipient of the Western University History of Medicine Award, given annually to an undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) student in their final year who has shown enthusiasm, excellence and interest in the History of Medicine throughout their undergraduate medical education.

Melissa Chopcian, Medicine Class of 2022, is the 2020 Harvey Club of London Prize Recipient for her project, "Unpacking the Medicine Chest Clause of Treaty 6." This prize is awarded annually for the best medical student paper in the History of Medicine.

The 2020 Rowntree Prize winners are Jelena Poleksic and Jacob Wihlidal, both from the Medicine Class of 2022. This prize is awarded annually in memory of Dr. L.G. Rowntree, and acknowledges work in medical history completed by a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry medical student. Poleksic was awarded the prize for her project "Psychiatrists, gynecologists, and the insane woman: Puerperal insanity in Canada, 1880-1910." Wihlidal’s award-winning project is entitled, "Seaweed, Scalpels, and Sanguine: How eleventh and twelfth century documentation of surgical goitre cosmesis shaped modern thyroid surgery."
