Announcement: Susanne Schmid, PhD, has been appointed as the Vice Dean, Basic Medical SciencesI am pleased to announce that Susanne Schmid, PhD, has been appointed as the Vice Dean, Basic Medical Sciences, at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2025.
Dr. Schmid earned a degree in biology from the University of Tübingen in Germany in 1993 and a PhD in animal physiology in 1997. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 2007. She served as Director of the neuroscience graduate program from 2015 to 2018 and has been the Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies since 2018.
Dr. Schmid is an internationally recognized biomedical researcher and academic leader. Her research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying sensory filtering and its impact on higher cognitive processes in normal and disease states.
The recipient of numerous research awards, Dr. Schmid has been acknowledged by the German Research Council, the Wilhelm Schuler Foundation, the Ontario Mental Health Foundation, the Ontario Brain Institute, the Simons Foundation for Autism Research, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). She has been honoured with doctoral and postdoctoral intramural research training awards from the German Academic Exchange Council, a Young Investigator Award, a Heisenberg Fellowship and a Dean’s Award of Excellence.
Dr. Schmid participates on numerous grant review committees, including CIHR and NSERC. She is also involved in many professional societies, faculty and university committees, and editorial boards, and serves as a manuscript reviewer.
