Announcement: Dr. Richard Cherry appointed Associate Dean, Learning with Technology & Simulation

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Cherry has been appointed as Associate Dean, Learning with Technology & Simulation, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective from October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2022.

Dr. Cherry earned his MD in 1993, and residency training in Anesthesia at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He also completed an Anesthesia Informatics Fellowship at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1999.

Dr. Cherry’s teaching and research interests include the use of simulation techniques for health professions education with a focus on theatre based simulation, debriefing and crisis management. In 2000, Dr. Cherry joined the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry at Western as an Assistant Professor and became an Associate Professor in 2007. He is also a staff anesthesiologist at London Health Sciences Centre.

Dr. Cherry is the Founder of Anesthesia and Critical Care Teaching through Simulation and has been serving as their Director since 2006. He is also the Director of the Medical Simulation Fellowship program within the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Cherry has served on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Anesthesia Examination Board from 2006 – 2014, where he helped to introduce simulation based technologies to the national high stakes examination. He is an active member in the Royal College Simulation Educator Training course and the Royal College Simulation Accreditation Committee, as well as former chair of the Royal College Simulation Summit from 2015 - 2016. He previously held an appointment as the Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry from 2014 – 2017.

Dr. Cherry is the recipient of several teaching awards including the Department of Anesthesia &Perioperative Medicine Awards: Undergraduate Teacher of the Year in 2003 and 2008; and Resident Teacher of the Year in 2005 and 2009; and Fellow Teacher of the Year in 2011.
