Announcement: Dr. Narinder Paul appointed Chair/Chief, Department of Medical Imaging

We are pleased to announce Dr. Narinder Paul has been appointed as Chair/Chief, Department of Medical Imaging in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022.

Dr. Paul earned a medical degree from the Southampton University Medical School in Hampshire, United Kingdom in 1987. In 2001, he served as Division Chief, Thoracic Imaging, at the University Health Network, Mount Sinai and Women’s College Hospitals in Toronto, and was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto in 2002. Dr. Paul has held extensive administrative appointments, including Division Head of Cardiothoracic Imaging; Medical Director of the Advanced Imaging Education Centre; and Associate Vice Chief – Heart, Lung and Vessel Research at the University of Toronto. In 2015, he was appointed to the rank of full Professor.

Dr. Paul also serves as Site Chief and Director of the Time Resolved Imaging and Image Optimization Core Laboratory in the Department of Medical Imaging at Toronto General Hospital.

The primary focus of Dr. Paul’s research is radiation dose reduction and image optimization in cardiothoracic imaging. The motivation for his research is founded in patient need and the potential for clinical translation and improved outcomes. Dr. Paul’s ongoing research interests include the areas of functional/physiological assessment, such as, dynamic lung perfusion, lung deformation and tissue characterization with computed tomography and addressing the unmet needs of patients admitted into the intensive care unit through design and evaluation of a novel, integrated digital tomosynthesis, dual energy and dynamic imaging mobile x-ray device.

Dr. Paul has full graduate appointments at the Institute of Medical Science and at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Paul has served on provincial, national and international professional associations and committees. He was Session Moderator for the American Roentgen Ray Society from 2004 to 2013;Program Director for the Seminar in Cardiothoracic and Musculoskeletal Imaging for Radiology Residents at the Universities of Toronto and Buffalo in 2005; Expert Panel Member on Thoracic Cancer Surgery Standards at Cancer Care Ontario in 2005; Program Director of The Annual Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Cardiovascular Symposium from 2008 to present day; Board Member of the Ontario Association of Radiologists from 2010 to present day; Member of the Organizing Committee for the Canadian Cardio-Oncology Network from 2011 to 2015; and a member of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Executive (2006-present).

Dr. Paul received the Certificate of Merit in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2015, and Magna Cum Laude in 2007, 2008, and 2010 from the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, and the Society of Thoracic Radiology. In 2008, Dr. Paul received the Laidlaw Manuscript Award from the Institute of Medical Sciences in Toronto.
