Announcement: Dr. Ramiro Arellano appointed Interim Chair/Chief, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine

I am pleased to announce Dr. Ramiro Arellano has been appointed as Interim Chair/Chief of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 or until a new Chair/Chief is appointed.

Dr. Arellano earned a medical degree from Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1984, and subsequently an MSc from University of Toronto in 1994. He has been a Fellow at the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons since 1989. Dr. Arellano was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in 1992 and Dalhousie University in 1999. He was later promoted to an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University in 2002 and joined Queen’s University in 2004.

Dr. Arellano’s areas of focus in research and clinical settings include cardiac anesthesiology, intraoperative care, post-operative care, blood transfusion, blood conservation, and transthoracic echocardiography. He has worked as an anesthesiologist at various Ontario hospitals from 1989 to present. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, Schulich Medicine and Dentistry and Site Chief at University Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.

Dr. Arellano has held various administrative roles such as the Associate Chief, Department of Anesthesia, Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre from 2000 to 2002; Medical Director, Blood Conservation Program, Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre from 2001 to 2004; and Clinical Coordinator, Cardiac Anesthesia, Kingston General Hospital from 2006 to 2012 He is a member of several committees including the Department of Anesthesia Quality Improvement Committee, Blood Transfusion Committee, and Anesthesia Research Committee.

Dr. Arellano was the recipient of the Thomas Donald Hammell Memorial Award in 1987, and the Clinician Scientist award in 1982 and 1992.
