Special Announcement: Welcome to Dr. Jay Rosenfield, Vice Dean, Medical Education

I am pleased to announce Dr. Jay Rosenfield has been appointed as Vice Dean, Medical Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective September 1, 2017 until August 31, 2023.

Dr. Rosenfield graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music/University of Toronto with a diploma in piano performance in 1978, and then completed medical school at the University of Toronto in 1982. He is certified in Paediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Board of Pediatrics, and received a Master’s of Education degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in 1998.

A developmental paediatrician and clinician-educator, Dr. Rosenfield has had active appointments at The Hospital for Sick Children and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, and has been Co- Program Director of the Developmental Paediatric Fellowship Program. Dr. Rosenfield’s leadership work in developmental paediatrics has included co-chairing a multi-million dollar government initiative to help at risk preschool children and he has been awarded both the Meritorious Service and President’s award from the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario.

Dr. Rosenfield was a Full Professor of Paediatrics, and served as Vice-Dean, MD Program in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto from 2006-2016. In that role, Dr. Rosenfield oversaw significant enrollment growth, launched and graduated the first class from the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, implemented numerous curricular innovations, created new leadership offices and positions to support the continuing evolution of the program, and successfully completed two accreditation reviews in 2004 and 2012.

Dr. Rosenfield is recognized as a national/international leader in medical education. He co-led the Future of Medical Education in Canada - MD Project of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. He is also co-leading the implementation of the Transitions Recommendation of the Future of Medical Education in Canada - PG project, overseeing national efforts for effective integration across the continuum of medical education from MD programs, through residency and into practice, including transformative changes in competency based curricula, final year of medical school structure, selection into residency processes, and assessment methodologies.

Dr. Rosenfield was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the seminal report of the Lancet Global Commission: Health professionals for a new century: transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent world, and was the sole Canadian member of Association of American Medical Colleges- Core Competencies for Entering Residency panel that published Entrustable Professional Activities EPA’s. Most recently, Dr. Rosenfield chaired the Task Force on Undergraduate Medical Education Accreditation in Canada established by Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Board to revise in a transformative fashion the current processes of accreditation of medical schools in Canada.

Dr. Rosenfield has been a council member of the Medical Council of Canada since 2004 and now sits on their Executive Board. He is a member of the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario Registration Committee, the Accreditation Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and is the Royal College representative on the Canadian Residency Matching Service Board.

Dr. Rosenfield is a passionate educator, a strong advocate for learners, and a skilled leader of systemic change.
