Announcement: Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti has been extended as Chair/Chief of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti has been extended as Chair/Chief of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London effective July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. This appointment extension has been approved by the Hospital Boards and the University Provost.

Dr. Chakrabarti graduated with an MBBS in 1981 and received a Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1983 from the University of Calcutta in India. He also received a Master’s of Science in Pathology in 1986 and a PhD in 1988 from the University of Manitoba. He has completed extensive post-graduate and research training at various institutions and joined Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1994.

Dr. Chakrabarti’s research speciality is diabetic retinopathy and other chronic diabetic complications. His current research is funded by CIHR, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario. He has published many journal articles and book chapters. He is also very active in Schulich Medicine & Dentistry education programs, teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs, as well as supervising a number of graduate students. He is a member of many National Societies and serves on the editorial boards of many prominent journals, in addition to serving on a number of Departmental, Hospital, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and University committees.

Recognized for his success, Dr. Chakrabarti was the recipient of the Premier’s Excellence in Research Award in 2003, and the Dean’s Award of Excellence in Research in 2005. He was awarded a Faculty Scholar Award from Western University in 2008.
