Schulich Award of Excellence for Faculty in Community/Distributed Sites

Award Description
To recognize an outstanding faculty educator who has displayed exceptional interest and enthusiasm for the learning needs of trainees.

Eligibility
To be eligible for this award, the nominee must be a faculty member, MD or non-MD, in any of our community/distributed sites who contributes to Schulich medical and/or dental education programs. Recipients may be from any community across Southwestern Ontario (e.g. any of the Academies, London or Windsor). Recipients of this award may be re-nominated after three-years. Up to four awards are available annually. The number of awards given will be based on applicants and available funding.

Criteria
This award considers contributions in the areas of:

  • Demonstrated superior leadership;
  • Teaching ability;
  • Accessibility or willingness to help trainees beyond the norm;
  • Ability to serve as an exemplary role model;
  • Other traits nominators deem to be important (e.g. research)

Nomination Procedure
All faculty, learners and staff in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry may nominate an individual. The nominee must be aware of the nomination and there must be acknowledgement from the nominee’s Department Chair or designate of the nomination.
To nominate a faculty member for this award, submit a nomination package online which includes the following materials as outlined in the criteria:

  1. A letter from the nominator that summarizes:
    The name of the individual you are recommending for this award
    Your name (to be kept confidential)
    Description of the Nominee: Tell the story by providing specific examples of how/why the nominee should be considered for the award.
  2. A letter from the Department Chair or designate or a letter from the Academic Director or designate acknowledging the nomination

The $1,000 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

Schulich Continuing Dental Education Educator Award

Award Description
To recognize exemplary teaching/distinguished commitments and/or outstanding service to Continuing Dental Education (CDE).


Eligibility

The recipient of this award is to be a faculty member in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Recipients of this award may be re-nominated after three-years.

Criteria
This award considers contributions in the areas of:

  • Contributions in teaching, program development or other related areas
  • Number and frequency of contributions
  • Feedback of participants
  • Administrative contributions to the field of Continuing Dental Education
  • Research or other scholarly activity
  • Innovation, creativity and ingenuity

Nomination Procedure
To nominate a faculty member for this award, submit a nomination package online which includes the following materials as outlined in the criteria:

  1. A letter from the nominator that summarizes
    The nominee's contributions to Continuing Dental Education
    Why the candidate should be chosen to receive this award (specifically addressing the criteria for the award).  
  2. A minumum of one (1) and up to three (3) additonal letters of support
  3. Up to a maximum of three (3) pages of feedback preferably from workshop/program participants which could be provided by the Continuing Dental Education Office.
  4. Nominators will be required to complete all documentation and submit the completed nomination package online to the Schulich Dentistry Awards Committee prior to the published deadline.

An award may not be granted every year. The $1,000 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

Award Description

The recipient of this award is to be a faculty or staff member from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry or from Western University who has contributed to the Faculty Development Program. Recipients of this award may be re-nominated after three-years. Up to two awards are available annually. The number of awards given will be based on applicants and available funding.

Criteria

This award considers contributions in the areas of:

  • Contributions in teaching, program development, or other related areas
  • Number and frequency of contributions
  • Feedback participants 
  • Administrative contributions to Faculty Development
  • Research or other scholarly activity

Nomination Procedure
To nominate a faculty member or staff for this award, submit a nomination package online, which includes the following materials as outlined in the criteria:

  1. A letter from the nominator that summarizes:
    Nominee's contributions to the Faculty Development Program in Continuing Professional Development
    Why the candidate should be chosen to receive this award (specifically addressing the criteria for this award)
  2. Nominations may also be supplimented by the inclusion of up to three (3) additional letters and up to three (3) pages of feedback from workshop/program participants
  3. Nominators will be required to complete all documentation and submit the completed nomination package online to the awards committee prior to the published deadline.

Schulich Excellence in Education Awards (Graduate/Postgraduate)

Award Description
To recognize educational success and to stimulate further development and achievement. See below for criteria and categories.


Eligibility
All full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty in graduate, and postgraduate programs in medicine, dentistry, or basic medical sciences, including clinical teachers and basic medical scientists in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, are eligible. These awards are for individuals, not teams.

Categories and Criteria
Schulich Educator Award - $1,000 cash award
Nominees need a minimum 5 of 10 of the following attributes. 

  • Demonstrated excellence as a graduate or postgraduate teacher
  • Commitment and dedication to graduate or postgraduate education
  • Involvement in graduate or postgraduate curriculum design and changes
  • Innovative approaches to graduate or postgraduate teaching
  • Innovative approaches to graduate or postgraduate course/curriculum design
  • Graduate or postgraduate course or program coordinator/director
  • Positive impact on student educational experience
  • Mentor and role model
  • Nominated and/or received teaching awards
  • Leader at the local level

Schulich Leader in Graduate Studies or Postgraduate Medicinal/Dental Education(up to two awarded)- $5,000 ($1,000 cash award, and $4,000 scholarly activity)
Educator criteria as above, plus at least four of the following

  • Major involvement in graduate or postgraduate curriculum development
  • Recognized at the provincial or national level for education activities
  • Involvement at the provincial or national level in setting policy, standards, examinations, etc.
  • Contributions to important campus-wide educational initiatives
  • Recipient of teaching awards
  • Scholarly activities in education
  • Teacher of teachers

Schulich Distinguished Leader in Graduate Studies or Postgraduate Education (up to two awarded) - $10,000 ($1,000 cash award, $9,000 for scholarly activity)
Leader criteria as above, plus at least 4 of the following

  • International leader in graduate or postgraduate education
  • Long and dedicated commitment to education which has had an impact on student/trainee learning experience
  • Chair of national committee(s) on education and/or evaluation
  • Contributions have had a major impact at the national and/or international levels
  • Tackled a thorny or delicate issue resulting in change with an impact
  • Winner of major teaching award(s)

The first $1,000 of each prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner. The remaining monies (if any) will be held in a University account to be used for a project of scholarly activity or travel related to scholarly research and development (proposal approval is not necessary but a summary report would be expected). The funds set aside for scholarly activity must be expended within a two-year period. Recipients of awards may be re-nominated for the same award every three years or be re-nominated for a different category each year.

Nominations Procedure
To nominate a faculty member for this award, submit a nomination package online which includes the following materials as outlined in the criteria:

    1. Letter of nomination signed by the nominator and seconder
    2. Letter from the Department Chair or designate acknowledging the nomination
    3. Letters of support from peers (maximum three)
    4. Letters of support from students/residents/fellows/postdoctoral scholars (maximum three)
    5. Short teaching dossier (four pages) that defines excellence in teaching emphasizing graduate/postgraduate educational activities, undergraduate teaching strength does not qualify for this award
    6. Evaluations of teaching by students (group scores and individual comments)
    7. For UWOFA faculty, clarify workload percentages for research, teaching and service. For Physician Faculty who have Academic Role Categories clarify role component percentages: clinical service, teaching, research, role model\generalcontributions\healthcareleadership and administration

Nominators may wish to contact the Manager in the nominee•s department for advice on putting together a nomination package. It is the responsibility of the department to ensure that the package is put together and complete.

Notes
The awards are in recognition of excellence in graduate/postgraduate education; all letters of support for these awards should comment specifically on the excellence of the nominee regarding graduate/postgraduate teaching, curriculum development and trainee mentorship. The candidate•s nomination package will be viewed by the committee but the decision of the committee will be based on the candidate•s demonstrated excellence with regards to graduate/postgraduate teaching activities.

Schulich Faculty Mentorship Award

Award Description
To recognize exemplary commitment to faculty mentorship within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Eligibility
To be eligible for this award, the nominee must:
1.    be a faculty member in the School for at least five years
2.    be nominated by a faculty member from the School
3.    have contributed to the success of our faculty and the School through mentorship.  

Recipients of this award may be re-nominated after a five year period.  No previous award is required (e.g. departmental award).

Categories and Criteria
This award considers examples of contributions such as:

  • An advocate for the mentee
  • A sponsor for the mentee
  • Demonstrated compassion, empathy and enthusiasm
  • Ability to offer constructive criticism and feedback
  • Ability to communicate and share information and personal experiences
  • Commitment and dedication to the mentee
  • Positive impact on the mentees experience
  • Ability to serve as an exemplary role model (e.g. high moral and ethical standards)
  • Promote professional development
  • Create networking opportunities
