Nominations for the 2024 Awards are open until March 10, 2024

Dean’s awards of excellence are designed to recognize and honour Schulich faculty members that have documented evidence of exceptional performances in research, innovation, outreach, service, and/or mentorship. These awards are prestigious and should help establish recipients with a successful platform enhancing their competitiveness for further university, provincial, national, and/or international awards, prizes, and honours.

Eligibility & Key Considerations

  • Nominees must hold an active faculty appointment at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in the year they are nominated for the award.
  • All faculty, learners and staff in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry may nominate an individual in any category.
  • The nominee must agree to be nominated.
  • A nominator may have a primary appointment in another Faculty but must have extensive knowledge of the nominee’s portfolio within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
  • A nominator may have an appointment in another Faculty but must have extensive knowledge of the nominee’s portfolio within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
  • If the nominator is not the nominee’s Chair or Chair/Chief, the nominator must make the Chair or Chair/Chief of the nominee’s home department aware of the nomination.
  • Award winners are not eligible to be nominated again in the same category for 10 years but remain eligible to be nominated in another category. In any given year, a faculty member may be nominated in more than one category but may only receive one award.
  • Unsuccessful nominees that remain eligible are encouraged to apply the following year and the nominator does not need to acquire updated letters of support unless they feel it will significantly enhance the nomination.
The Awards
  • Awards may be given in seven distinct categories each year. The number of awards given per category each year may vary depending on the breadth and depth of excellent nominations received in each category. The adjudication committee may choose to not offer an award in each category if they deem the cohort of nominations fail to meet the expected level of excellence.
  • Nominations will be adjudicated by a committee of Schulich faculty colleagues chaired by the Assistant Dean, Research Chairs and Awards.
  • Award winners will receive a cash prize of $2,000 that can be used at the discretion of the recipient.
  • Awards are presented at an Awards of Excellence Celebration and dinner to be held in the spring of each year. Recipients will also receive two complimentary tickets to attend the Awards of Excellence Dinner, one for themselves and one for a guest.

Dean's Awards of Excellence - Research & Innovation

Award Description
These awards are designed to recognize overall excellence in research and innovation for faculty members that are at various stages of career progression.

A maximum of 6 awards may be given each year.

  • Early career investigators are defined as faculty that are within 6 years of their initial appointment as an independent faculty member.
  • Mid-career investigators are defined as investigators that have completed 6 years as an independent faculty member but have not exceeded 15 years.
  • Senior investigators are faculty members who are beyond 15 years of their initial appointment as an independent faculty member. Appropriate adjustments in eligibility will be given to faculty that have been on leave (e.g., parental leave, sick leave).
It is the intent of the committee that one award would be given to a clinical researcher and a basic scientist at each career stage. Depending on the depth and breadth of the nominee pool, the adjudication committee may adjust the number of awards granted amongst the category but collectively will grant no more than 6 awards in any year.
