The Awards of Excellence - Windsor Campus celebrate the commitment and dedication of faculty, residents, staff and students. As mentors and role models, the recipients each year are distinguished by their leadership skills and embodiment of the values of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

*NEW* DR. BRIAN BURKE AWARD

Dr. Brian Burke Resident Award in Psychiatry

The Dr. Brian Burke Resident Award in Psychiatry is awarded annually to a trainee completing their residency in Psychiatry at the Schulich Medicine - Windsor Campus. The resident will have demonstrated proficiency and dedication to the field of psychiatry, as well as a devotion to the advancement of psychiatry in the Windsor community through their demonstrated leadership. The successful nominee should exhibit one or more of the characteristics that embody the legacy of Dr. Brian Burke: love, compassion, patient advocacy, creativity, curiosity, music, connection and fun.

There are not many areas in mental health care where Dr. Burke didn't leave his mark. In his years as a psychiatrist in Windsor, Dr. Burke served in various leadership roles, from hospital Staff Psychiatrist, to the Post Grad Director of Psychiatry at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry-Windsor and more. This award was established by Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare in memory of Dr. Brian Burke.

Award value
The $2,000 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

Criteria:
  • Preference to a student completing their residency in Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry-Windsor campus.
  • Preference to residents who demonstrate proficiency in psychiatry and leadership during their training.
  • The successful nominee should ideally exhibit one or more of the characteristics that embody the legacy of Dr. Brian Burke: love, compassion, patient advocacy, creativity, curiosity, music, connection and fun.

DR. COLIN NISBET AWARD

Dr. Colin Nisbet Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine

The Dr. Colin Nisbet Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate Schulich Medicine - Windsor Campus student graduating from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program who demonstrates proficiency and passion for emergency medicine. This student will have demonstrated a commitment to providing excellent care in emergency medicine to patients and their families while being a considerate and knowledgeable part of the health care team. Nominations may be submitted by Schulich Medicine appointed emergency medicine physicians/faculty who have been in direct contact with students during their 3rd year emergency medicine rotation and/or 4th year ER elective.

In his years as an emergency physician in Windsor, Dr. Nisbet served as an educator and mentor to many, displaying a work ethic and passion in the practice of emergency medicine which has been admired by his colleagues, his patients, and the entire health care team. This award was established by the colleagues, friends, and family of Dr. Colin Nisbet.

Award value
The $1,100 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

Criteria:
  • The nominee must be a full-time undergraduate Schulich Medicine - Windsor Campus student graduating from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.

DR. GORDON VAIL AWARD

Dr. Gordon Vail Resident Award in Emergency Medicine

The Dr. Gordon Vail Resident Award is awarded annually to a student completing their residency in Emergency Medicine at the Schulich Medicine - Windsor Campus. The resident will have demonstrated a proficiency and dedication to the field of emergency medicine with an ability to integrate into the emergency medicine team by providing superb medical care to their patients, as well as a devotion to the advancement of emergency medicine in the Windsor community. Preference will be given to residents who have also demonstrated a dedication to athletics and leadership during their training.

Dr. Vail was a skilled and valued colleague and loyal true friend. He served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department, and Chief of Staff of Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, Ontario. He was an avid hockey player being active on the Ontario Medical Association teams, and the Windsor Emergency Services Hockey League. He provided 18 years of service, dedication and leadership to the Windsor community. He demonstrated a tireless work ethic and a devotion to excellent care to his patients and the entire team in emergency medicine. Dr. Vail died in 2019 at the age of 49. His service and life will always be remembered.

The $3,500 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

  • The nominee must be a student completing their residency in Emergency Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry-Windsor campus.

WINDSOR EXCELLENCE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION AWARDS

Associate Dean’s Award of Excellence in Medical Education

Windsor Campus faculty and staff are asked to consider nominating an outstanding individual who contributes to providing the best learner experience, promotes leadership and personal growth, and builds and fosters core values of integrity, respect and commitment to service within the Windsor Campus.

This award is to publicly acknowledge and express appreciation for an individual’s leadership and outstanding contribution to the well-being of learners at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry—Windsor Campus.

Award value
A crystal trophy and public accolades will be presented to the prize winner.

Criteria:
  • The nominee must be an active Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus learner or Schulich Medicine resident (in good academic standing), an appointed Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus faculty member, facilitator/educator, staff member, hospital staff associate, or volunteer actively engaged in the Windsor Campus within the current academic year
  • Award recipients are only eligible to receive this award once every four years

Educators’ Award of Excellence in Medical Education

Learners are asked to consider nominating an outstanding educator or staff member who has displayed exceptional interest and enthusiasm for the learning needs of all Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus learners; demonstrated superior leadership; teaching ability; accessibility or willingness to help learners beyond the norm; and the ability to serve as an exemplary role model; or other traits nominators deem to be important.

The purpose of this award is to publicly acknowledge and express appreciation for an instructor or a staff member’s leadership and outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of learners at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus.

Award value
A crystal trophy and public accolades will be presented to the prize winner.

Criteria:
  • The nominee must be an appointed Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus faculty member, facilitator/educator, staff member, hospital associate or volunteer actively engaged in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus within the current academic year
  • Award recipients are only eligible to receive this award once every four years
  • Nominations may be submitted by any active learner currently enrolled in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus or any Schulich Medicine Resident who has completed a rotation/s in Windsor during the current academic year

Learner Peer Award of Excellence in Medical Education

Learners are asked to consider nominating a fellow Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus learner who has displayed exceptional interest and enthusiasm and the ability to generate learner enthusiasm; and made a significant contribution to improving the quality of academic or extracurricular life in Windsor.

The purpose of this award is to publicly acknowledge and express appreciation for a peer learner’s provision of leadership and contribution to the wellbeing of other learners at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus.

Award value
A crystal trophy and public accolades will be presented to the prize winner.

Criteria:
  • The nominee must be an active learner currently enrolled in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus or a Schulich Medicine Resident who has trained in Windsor during the current academic year
  • Nominees shall be in good academic standing
  • Award recipients are only eligible to receive this award once every two years

FAMILY MEDICINE AWARDS

Windsor Family Medicine Faculty of the Year

This award is given annually to a Windsor Campus Family Medicine faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing Family Medicine residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program.

A crystal trophy and public accolades will be presented to the prize winner.

Criteria:
  • A current Family Medicine preceptor with a faculty appointment in the Department of Family Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus
  • Nominations may be submitted by PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3 Residents and Windsor Campus staff

Windsor Family Medicine, Sub Specialty Rotation - Faculty Member of the Year

This award is given annually to a faculty member outside of the Department of Family Medicine in a specialty rotation who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing Family Medicine residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program.

Criteria:
  • A Family Medicine resident preceptor, holding a current faculty appointment with the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus, in a specialty other than Family Medicine
  • Nominations may be submitted by PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3 Residents and Windsor Campus staff

Family Medicine Postgraduate Award for Academic Leadership

This award seeks to honour a resident who has displayed exceptional interest and enthusiasm for the promotion of the Windsor Campus Family Medicine residency program, learning needs of fellow residents, demonstrated superior leadership, accessibility or willingness to support fellow residents beyond the norm, and the ability to serve as an exemplary role model.

Award value
The $500 prize is a cash award to be used at the discretion of the winner.

Criteria:
  • Any resident PGY1 or PGY2 or PGY3 training in Windsor
  • Nominations may be submitted by preceptors, staff and residents

PSYCHIATRY AWARDS

Windsor Psychiatry Faculty of the Year

This award is given annually to a Windsor Campus Psychiatry faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing Psychiatry residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program.

A crystal trophy and public accolades will be presented to the prize winner.

Criteria:
  • A current Psychiatry preceptor with a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Windsor Campus
  • Nominations may be submitted by PGY1, PGY2, PGY3, PGY4 and PGY5 Residents and Windsor Campus staff
