Profile

After doing a one year fellowship in ACT I joined the department in 1997 as an Assistant Professor, then was the CME director for a number of years. During this time my clinical work was primarily in the PEPP Program where the model of early intervention was developed and implemented along with other collaborators, the focus was teaching at UGE/PGE level and active participation in research projects/clinical drug trails within the context of clinical care which resulted in a number of publications as co-author. I led the creation of Preceptors hip Programs for community family doctors in psychiatry for a number of years as the CME director. Then, this was followed by my appointment as Associate Dean CPD for over 12 years which provided me with an opportunity to provide leadership and organizational structure to a unit which was newly implemented. During this tenure I served as Royal College Examiner for 7 years, as mentor to many medical students over the years. As the CPD office was structured in a financially self sustaining manner, the maintenance and operation of the unit relied on grants from external sources such as Royal College, AMOSO, GAC, Ministry, in addition to creating innovative programs for CPD for the learners in SWO. The unit under my leadership went through two successful accreditation processes and led to CME bias studies which were at a national level and results were presented internationally. The latter resulted in a national update and revision of conflict of interest policies in a standardized manner. I was CPD surveyor for units in two other provinces. Another significant study under my leadership tenure with CPD was the academic detailing study at a national level on Polypharmacy with Antipsychotic agents along with other collaborators .

During my career trajectory I have won several awards along with national and international recognition. In the last decade my interest and focus has been on Collaborative Care whereby the initial phases involved participating and co-leading the development of the Model in Ontario, followed by implementation of the model locally in collaboration with the Northern Ontario medical school faculty lead via research and scholarly work. Once locally implemented, teaching others in Ontario about the workings of the model. The work in CPD and Collaborative Care has resulted in multiple publications over the years with several citations in high impact journals. I have contributed to 2 book chapters; one on serious mental illness and the second Transition into Primary Care from Hospital Based Care more recently. As well, I contributed to UGE/PGE over the years with clinical teaching during rotations, creating the first Collaborative Care lecture series as well as the lectures on Interacting with the Pharmaceutical Industry for those medical students and residents at the end of their training.
