Profile

Arlene MacDougall, MD, MSc, is the Director of Research for the Department of Psychiatry and an Associate Professor (Clinician Researcher) of Psychiatry and Epidemiology & Biostatistics. She is also the Director of Research and Innovation for Mental Health Care at St. Joseph’s Health Care London and Parkwood Institute Research – Mental Health theme.

Dr. MacDougall leads trans-disciplinary and cross-sectoral educational, research and innovation initiatives that apply mindful social innovation approaches for tackling complex mental health system challenges both locally and globally (Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and El Salvador). These include the MINDS (Mental Health INcubator for Disruptive Solutions) of London-Middlesex - Canada's first social innovation lab addressing complex community mental health challenges starting with the mental health of youth and young adults, the CREATE Kenya project focused on the use of social entrepreneurism and psychosocial rehabilitation in low income settings, and Global MINDS @ Western - now a registered Canadian charity, The Global MINDS Collective. She also contributed to the design, establishment and evaluation of Biigajiiskaan: Indigenous Pathways to Mental Wellness - a novel approach to care for Indigenous people with severe and persistent mental illness that incorporates both Western mental health care and Indigenous knowledge and traditional healing.

Dr. MacDougall also conducts research in the areas of youth mental health, mindfulness, early psychosis, and collaborative care.

Dr. MacDougall is a psychiatrist with the St. Joseph's Elgin Adult Ambulatory Program, the Southwestern Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre and the Thames Valley Family Health team.
