Dr. Hankir completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at The University of Manchester, Manchester, England in 2011. In 2016, Dr. Hankir received his Post-graduate Certificate in Epidemiology, Harvard Medical School Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program, Boston, USA. In 2020, Dr Hankir successfully passed the Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) examinations. In 2023, Dr Hankir completed a prestigious Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Adult Psychiatry at the world-renowned Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London and Maudsley Hospital.

One of Dr. Hankir's most recent roles was as a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research in association with Cambridge University. Another one of Dr. Hankir's recent roles was as Public Engagement and Education Lead at the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights, Institute of Mental Health, Nottingham University, UK.

Dr. Hankir has delivered oral presentations, Keynote Lectures and Grand Rounds in over 20 countries in five continents worldwide. Dr Hankir has a strong track record in medical education and has lectured at every medical school in the UK and at universities throughout the world. Dr Hankir's lectures have been integrated into the medical school curricula of King's College London and Cambridge University.

In recognition for his contributions for advancing global health, Dr Hankir received the 2022 World Health Organization Director General Award for Global Health which was personally presented to him by Dr Tedros at the WHO World Health Assembly in Geneva.

Dr. Hankir's research interests include global and Muslim mental health and pioneering and evaluating innovative interventions that reduce mental health related stigma and Islamophobia. Dr Hankir has advised the World Health Organization on human rights and mental health and the New Zealand Government on the psychological consequences of the Christchurch Mosque Terror Attacks. Dr Hankir was the Principal Investigator for several pilot studies on challenging mental health related stigma throughout the UK. Dr Hankir has co-authored three textbooks on religion and psychiatry (published by Springer) and is currently co-editing a fourth textbook. Dr Hankir's clinical interests include the treatment of trauma-related conditions and providing care to patients from minority religious and ethnic backgrounds.
