Biography

Dr. Jacob McGee, MD, FRCSC, MPH, is a Gynecologic Oncologist at London Health Sciences Centre and Associate Professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Western University. He completed his residency at the University of Ottawa and fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Toronto. He also holds a Master’s in Community Health and Epidemiology from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto.

A typical day sees Dr. McGee consulting with new and returning patients, managing surgical and systemic treatments, including chemotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and PARP inhibitors. What continues to energize him most is walking alongside patients in their cancer journey. “Watching them carry the burden of illness and come through treatment—it’s a privilege,” he shares. He’s also inspired by the perspective of medical learners, who help him see routine practices with fresh eyes.

His public health training shaped how he thinks about clinical problems, with an epidemiological lens and a deep curiosity about what population-level data can reveal. As an adjunct scientist with ICES (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences), Dr. McGee uses large provincial datasets to explore outcomes in gynecologic cancer care. He likens the work to “a massive set of Legos—you try to build a clear picture of care from scattered pieces, without bias or interruption.”

His research includes investigating whether endometrial ablation may reduce the future risk of endometrial or ovarian cancers, studying chemotherapy’s impact on pregnancy outcomes (with Dr. Meryl Hodge), and examining cost and care outcomes in ovarian cancer. He also collaborates with Western’s Dr. Trevor Shepherd on the role of genomics in diagnostics and treatment planning.

Outside of medicine, Dr. McGee is a dedicated beekeeper—a practice he describes as a blend of science, art, and reverence. “They’re incredible creatures. Their focus and singular purpose are awe-inspiring,” he says. “Beekeeping isn’t a casual hobby; it’s a crucible. Anyone can have bees, but not everyone can keep them alive. The challenge is helping them thrive—it’s a science experiment in your backyard, humbling and beautiful.”

He lives in London, Ontario, with his wife and five children. Following the passing of their beloved dog Jazz, the family now has Indie, an Australian cattle dog who, as Dr. McGee puts it, is “all business, all the time.”
