Biography
Dr. Basim Abu Rafea, MD FRCSC FACOG is the current Division Head of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (GREI) and, an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Western University – Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Medical Director of The Fertility Clinic at London Health Sciences Centre, Victoria Hospital.
He completed his medical degree at King Saud University (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Western University, where he also pursued a subspecialty training in both Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
Before returning to Canada in 2013, Dr. Abu Rafea held multiple leadership roles in Saudi Arabia, including Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at King Saud University, Director of the Assisted Conception Unit, and Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee at King Khalid University Hospital. He also established Saudi Arabia’s first clinics dedicated to abnormal uterine bleeding and chronic pelvic pain.
Dr. Abu Rafea is an accomplished clinical researcher with more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, two book chapters, and numerous national and international awards. His research focuses on embryo development and selection, single embryo transfer, minimally invasive surgery, and innovative approaches to abnormal uterine bleeding. He has developed several clinical databases that continue to inform and advance gynecologic practice
