Canadian Medical Graduates (CMGs)

Graduates of Canadian and U.S. accredited medical schools who have not completed prior postgraduate training must apply to PGY1 residency through CaRMS.

Most positions are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Additional funding may be available through the Department of National Defence for eligible candidates.

Final-year medical students apply directly to residency programs across Canada through CaRMS.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents who obtained their medical degree outside of Canada, graduates of a U.S. osteopathic medical school, and graduates of a U.S. allopathic medical school with a graduation date of July 1, 2025 or after are considered International Medical Graduates (IMGs).

IMGs apply for residency through CaRMS and can compete for and obtain medical residency positions. Medical residency positions are limited. Becoming a medical resident means satisfying requirements from the Medical Council of Canada, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).

IMGs are required to complete a Return of Service (ROS) program, a commitment to practice medicine in an elgiible Ontario community. Detailed information about the ROS is available from the Ontario Ministry of Health, download the complete information package.
