Principles for Outgoing Elective Rotations
Residents planning an elective at another medical school must obtain written approval from their Program Director before applying. They are responsible for following the registration process of the host institution, as well as meeting all licensing authority requirements and malpractice insurance regulations.
The maximum elective duration is determined by the licensing body, the home program, and the host program.
For electives in the United States, residents must ensure they have the appropriate travel documentation (consult Health Canada or the U.S. Department of State). CMPA coverage does not apply to U.S. electives.
All postgraduate training programs at Western University are designed to deliver training locally in London, Windsor, and the Distributed Education (DE) area, unless an Inter-University Agreement (IUA) is in place. Mandatory rotations outside the local area without an IUA require PGME Dean approval. Non-mandatory, elective rotations are permitted and arranged by the trainee with the PGME office or residency program of the host institution.
Elective Rotations
For residents, elective rotations must meet accreditation standards of either:
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- College of Family Physicians of Canada
For clinical fellows, elective rotations must:
- Be approved by the fellowship Director or Supervisor
- Up to 3 months away from London, Windsor or DE area: approved at the program level.
- More than 3 months: requires written request to the Program Director, and PGME Dean approval at least three months before the elective.
