What is Medical Sciences?
Medical Sciences First Entry is your most direct route to the BMSc degree. Complete all the requirements in Medical Sciences 1 (Year 1) & Medical Sciences 2 (Year 2) and progress to BMSc Year 3 & 4.

How the pathway works
Admission to Medical Sciences does not guarantee admission to the BMSc Program
Medical Sciences 1
Take a range of courses in Year 1 as well as Med Sci 1000Y, a course tailored to help you discover disciplines in the basic medical sciences and chart your academic journey.
Medical Sciences 2
Take the courses required for admission to your desired module(s) for Year 3 BMSc. In March of Year 2, choose your preferred module(s) for year 3 BMSc.
Year 3 BMSc
Welcome to BMSc! Engage more fully with courses in medical sciences as part of your Honours Specialization or Honours Double Major in BMSc.
Year 4 BMSc
Complete your modular requirements, including a culminating capstone experience that only BMSc students have access to.
Apply to Medical Sciences
Required high‑school courses
- Biology 12U
- Chemistry 12U
- Calculus & Vectors 12U
- English 12U
- two other 4U/M courses
- Physics 12U recommended (you’ll take physics in first year).
Admission averages & competitiveness
- Last three cycles: cut‑off in high 80s or low 90s (not pre‑set).
- Guaranteed BMSc entry for Medial Sciences 2 students who meet conditions for assured admission which includes a minimum average of 80% on the second year courses required for admission to their Honours Specialization or Double Major in BMSc.
Alternate route
Medical Sciences First Entry (ESM) is not the only entry into Western’s BMSc program.
