The competitive pool

The competitive pool is a group of students who compete for the remaining Year 3 BMSc spots after assured-admission students are placed, including Med Sci 2 students who don’t meet guaranteed-entry requirements and students from other faculties.

competitive pool diagram

There are two pathways for admission to the BMSc Program in Year 3. Seats are filled in this order:

  1. Assured admission: As a Medical Sciences 2 (Med Sci 2) student, you’re guaranteed a spot in Year 3 BMSc (subject to module admission) when you:
    • keep a full course load in Medical Sciences 2
    • maintain a minimum 80% average on 2000-level courses required for admission by the end of Fall/Winter of Med Sci 2
  2. Competitive pool: As a Medical Sciences 2 (Med Sci 2) student, if you don’t meet assured admission conditions or are applying from another faculty, you can apply for remaining spots via the competitive pool.

What about Honours Specializations?

Honours specializations have limited enrolment spaces.

  • As a Medical Sciences 2 student who’s met the conditions for assured admission (above) you have first priority admission.
  • As a student in the competitive pool you’ll be admitted to the remaining spaces

Minimum requirements for admission via the competitive pool

Average requirements

Mimumum average of 75% on the 2000-level courses required for admission for the module(s) to which the student applies.

Timelines

Make sure all of the courses listed in the admission requirements for the module to which you apply are completed prior to the beginning of Year 3; by the end of the summer in between Year 2 and 3.

Application

Submit your Intent to Register during the month of March to rank your top two module choices for Year 3 BMSc - no need to indicate you would like to be considered as part of the competitive pool, we will do that for you.

Frequently asked quastions

No.  A minimum average of 75% must be achieved on the 2000-level courses listed in the Admission Requirements for the module to which the student applies.

If 3.5 or more 2000-level courses are required for the module(s) to which you apply, a minimum average of 75% is required on the best 3.0 of these 2000-level courses.

Keep in mind that it is a minimum average of 75% that is required on the 2000-level Admission Requirements, not a minimum mark of 75% in each of these courses.

Yes. Students may repeat a maximum of one of these 2000-level half courses and, if one of these 2000-level half courses is repeated, the average on both attempts in the course must be at least 60% and will be used in calculating the minimum average.
Thus far, all "qualified" students from the Competitive Pool have been admitted to Year 3 BMSc, i.e., all applicants from the competitive pool who satisfied the minimum conditions for admission from the competitive pool have been satisfied. We don't see this trend changing over the next few years.
