Dr. John Denstedt’s appointment as Chair/Chief, Department of Surgery receives one-year extension

Congratulations Dr. John Denstedt on receiving a one-year extension on his appointment as Chair/Chief, Department of Surgery in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre & St. Joseph's Health Care London. This is effective July 1, 2013.

Dr. Denstedt graduated from medical school from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Western University in 1982. He also completed his residency in Urology in 1987, Western University. This was followed by a fellowship in Endourology under Dr. Ralph Clayman at Washington University in St. Louis. Upon returning to London he joined the Division of Urology in the Department of Surgery at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1990. Dr. Denstedt's previous administrative experience includes Richard Ivey Professor and Chair/Chief, Department of Surgery (2002-present), Integrated Senior Medical Director, Surgery Services, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London (2003-2012), Residency Program Director, Division of Urology (1996-1998) and Chief of Urology, St. Joseph's Health Care (1991-2002). He is currently a member of the Board of the American Urological Association and only the third Canadian to serve in this capacity in the 111 year history of the AUA.

In 2013 Dr. Denstedt was appointed to the position of Special Advisor to the Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry on Health Globalization, Internationalization and Simulation. In this role, he provides leadership for the implementation of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry White Paper on Globalization and Internationalization, with a specific focus on developing, enhancing and maintaining internationalization initiatives.

Dr. Denstedt is an internationally renowned scholar with career accomplishments encompassing more than 200 publications and book chapters; more than 250 guest professorships in countries throughout the world; and numerous honours and awards. He serves on the Editorial Board of 6 major Urology journals and is Managing Editor of the Journal of Endourology. His research interests include minimally invasive surgery, urolithiasis, biomaterials and urinary tract infection. With a specific interest in surgical education, he has participated in the development and validation of computer-based surgical simulators, which help train the next generation of surgeons.

Dr. Denstedt was the recipient of the University Students' Council Teaching Honour Roll Certificate (2010-2011, 2008-2009).
