New Chair/Chief of Pathology named

Following the approval of the hospital boards and the Provost, we are delighted to announce that Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti has been appointed as Chair/Chief of the Department of Pathology in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario, and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre & St. Joseph's Health Care, London, effective July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2016.

Dr. Chakrabarti graduated with an MBBS in 1981 and received a Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1983, both from the University of Calcutta in India. He also received his Master of Science in Pathology in 1986 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of Manitoba. He has completed extensive post-graduate and research training at various institutions and joined The University of Western in 1994. He was the recipient of the Premier's Excellence in Research Award in 2003 and the Dean's Award of Excellence in Research in 2005. He was awarded a Faculty Scholar Award from The University of Western Ontario in 2008.

Dr. Chakrabarti's research speciality is in diabetic retinopathy and other chronic diabetic complications. His current research is funded by CIHR, Canadian Diabetes Association, and Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario and he has a published many journal articles and book chapters. He is also very active in teaching in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical programs as well as supervising a number of Schulich graduate students. He is a member of many national societies and serves on the editorial boards of many prominent journals. He serves on a number of other University, Schulich, Department and Hospital committees.
