Schulich Chief Operating Officer selected

Dwayne Martins has accepted the position of Chief Operating Officer at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Dwayne brings extensive experience working in an academic health care environment. He has served as the Managing Director of the Department of Medicine at McMaster University for the last 8 years and has had responsibility for the comprehensive operation of the Department as well as being integrally involved in the development of the Alternative Funding Plan in Hamilton. He has significant expertise in developing joint strategies with the teaching hospital partners, been involved in the development of new Academic research chairs as well as working with industry and granting agencies for a number of grant submissions. During this period Dwayne has participated in teaching residents in the establishment of a medical practice.

While at McMaster, Dwayne has also been involved in many projects including recent campus wide labour negotiations where he was a key member of the McMaster bargaining team. Prior to his current role, Dwayne was Manager of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, which is affiliated with McMaster and St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, where he had responsibility for the administration and management of the Centre.

He received his Master of Health Sciences in Health Administration from the University of Toronto in 1999, Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier in 1998 and his Honours Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts from Lakehead University in 1997.

Dwayne will be in his position officially on June 1, however, over the next two months he will be making frequent trips to London to meet with individuals at the School, Western and Windsor.
