Applying for Clinical Fellowship training
Where to Submit Your Application
Applicants do not apply directly to the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry or the PGME Office.
There are two application pathways, depending on whether your country has a sponsorship agreement in place.
Application Pathways
Sponsored Applicants
If you are a citizen of a country that has a postgraduate training agreement with Schulich:
- You must apply through your official sponsoring agency only
- Neither the PGME Office or fellowship program accepts applications directly from individuals
- Your sponsoring agency submits your complete application package on your behalf
Non-Sponsored Applicants
If you are a citizen of a country without a postgraduate training agreement with Schulich:
- You apply directly to the specific fellowship program of interest
- Applications are reviewed by the Program Director
- Funding is not guaranteed and is subject to Program Director approval
Required Documents for Application
- Brief personal statement of interest in the fellowship program

- Copy of medical degree (with certified English translation, if applicable)

Language Requirements (TOEFL / IELTS)
As of January 1, 2003, English-language test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) are no longer required by PGME or the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. However:
- Some fellowship programs may still require English-language testing

What Happens After You Apply?
Step 1 - Application Review & Interview
After you submit your application, the program will review your documentation and contact you directly if you are selected for an interview.
Step 2 - Offer Letter
If you are successful following the interview, the program will issue you an offer letter. To accept the fellowship appointment, you must sign and return the offer letter.
Step 3 - PGME Appointment Processing
Once your signed offer letter is received, the program will notify the PGME office of your appointment. PGME will then:
- issue your official letter of acceptance to your sponsoring agency (if sponsored)
- begin preparing your appointment documentation
⇒ Sponsorship confirmation is required before CPSO or work permit documentation can be issued.
Step 4 - Sponsorship Confirmation & Letter of Appointment
After sponsorship confirmation is received (not required for non-sponsored fellows), PGME will issue your:
- Letter of Appointment (LOA)
- CPSO license application instructions
You will need to sign and return the LOA.
Step 5 - CPSO Eligibility Documentation
After PGME receives your signed LOA, they will:
- share the documentation with the CPSO
- request your Letter of Eligibility (LOE)
⇒ The LOE is required for work permit/visa applications for international fellows.
Step 6 - Work Permit / Visa Documentation
Once the LOE is received from the CPSO, PGME will provide all required documentation and instructions needed for your work permit application. If you require a visa, it will be processed as part of your work permit application. A separate visa application is not required.
