Western Global Opportunities Award

Value: Multiple awards of $1,000. Western International offers awards for international learning experiences including exchanges, study abroad programs, international field courses, summer programs, international service learning, field research, and more.

Western International Learning Award

Value: Multiple awards of $1,000. The International Learning Award is available to full-time undergraduate students in second year who are planning an international learning experience in their third year of study, including exchange study, international field courses, Alternative Spring Break, internships, and international research. Students with a cumulative average of 80% with a full-time course load at the end of Year 2 will automatically be eligible for this award.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Value: Multiple awards of $6,000. Mitacs offers $6,000 research awards for senior undergraduate students working on a joint research project for 12-24 weeks in a partner country.

Austria

Ernst Mach Grant 

Value: 1,050 Euros per month (plus additional stipends). The Ernst Mach Grant is available for international students interested in short term study/research (4-10 months) at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in a field of natural sciences, technical sciences, human medicine, health sciences, agricultural sciences, or social sciences. China

Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program

The Chinese Ministry of Education and DFATD Canada jointly sponsor this scholarship for short-term study/research (4-12 months) at participating Chinese institutions. The scholarship covers tuition fees, monthly stipends, and accommodations. For more information, visit the Government of Canada International Scholarship page.

Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Program

The Chinese Government has full or partial scholarships available for educational exchanges between Chinese and international institutions. The full scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, stipend, and medical insurance. For more information, visit the Study in China Scholarships page.

Germany

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate science students to work with research groups at top institutions across Germany for 2-3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language is English. For more information, visit the DAAD RISE website

Eligibility: Undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.

All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities & research institutes provide housing assistance. The award also includes health insurance as well as accident and personal liability insurance. 

Bayer Foundation Scholarships

The Otto Bayer Scholarship, Carl Duisberg Scholarship, and Kurt Hansen Scholarship are available for study or research in Germany in a science field (natural sciences or medicine).  For more information about each scholarship application, visit the Bayer Foundation website.

UAS7 Travel Scholarship

The German Study and Internship Program (SIP) enables undergraduate students from Canada and the United States to experience the German approach to hands-on education at a member of UAS7, a consortium of Germany's top Universities of Applied Sciences. SIP students spend a semester studying at a UAS7 campus and a semester interning. The UAS7 Internship Program (IP) and Study Program (SP) are also available for students doing only internship for 2-6 months or only study for one semester.

Successful applicants in the Study & Internship Program, Internship Program, and Study Program are eligible for a UAS7 Travel Scholarship of 1,000€ to help cover transatlantic travel expenses. Applicants will be notified about program and scholarship acceptance simultaneously.

Japan

JASSO Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) supports student exchanges ranging from 8 days to 1 year long at a Japanese university, graduate school, junior college, college of technology, or professional training college. The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of ¥80,000. Applications for the scholarship will be accepted through the Japanese school of choice. Amgen Scholars Japan Program

Amgen Scholars offers undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in a hands-on summer research in science or engineering at Kyoto University or The University of Tokyo. Eligible undergraduate students must be enrolled in a Bachelor degree program in their second year, third year, or non-graduating fourth-year (returning in the fall to continue undergraduate studies).

Scandinavia (Denmark, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, Sweden)

The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation Scholarship

The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation (CSF) sponsors a $500-$2,000 bursary for study or research in Denmark, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, or Sweden. Switzerland

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship

ThinkSwiss sponsors a scholarship for American and Canadian students to conduct summer research for 2-3 months in any field at a public university or research institute in Switzerland. Value: CHF 1,600/month (up to maximum CHF 4,800). For more information, visit the ThinkSwiss Brainstorm Blog.

United Kingdom

BUTEX Awards

The British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) offers several £500 scholarships to undergraduate students doing a study abroad or exchange placement at an affiliated BUTEX institution in the UK for one semester or one academic year.

Scotland's Saltire Scholarships

The Scottish Government and Scottish Higher Education Institutions offers scholarships for one year full-time study in Bachelor, Master's, or PhD level in priority sectors of creative industries, life sciences, technology, financial services and renewable/clean energy. North American Wales Foundation Exchange Scholarship

The Exchange Scholarship program provides an opportunity for North American students to apply for a $5,000 award to study in Wales. The award is designed to support students aspiring to Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees or equivalent at recognized academic institutions in Wales. Application must be supported by the host institution.The recipient does not have to be of a Welsh ethnic background however, a connection with Wales is an important asset. Canadian Robert T. Jones Jr. Scholarship

The Canadian Jones Foundation offers scholarships of $6,000 for exchange study at the University of St. Andrew's in Scotland.

Eligible participants: Western undergraduate students (main campus or an Affiliate College) who are entering the third or fourth year of an Honours program in the Faculties of Arts, Social Science or Science at the University of St. Andrews, who have a minimum academic average of 80% (A or first-class standing). Students must return to Western for a minimum of one term following their exchange.

USA

Killam Undergraduate Fellowships for Canadians

The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for Canadian undergraduate students to spend a semester or an academic year as an exchange student in the United States. Students may participate as a direct exchange student (registering at their home university, paying home fees, and attending the host university as an exchange visitor) or as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees). Canadian applicants interested in the direct exchange program must be registered at one of the participating Canadian universities and be planning to visit one of the participating American universities.

The Killam Fellowships Program provides $5,000 USD per semester, a 3-day orientation in Ottawa, and a 3-day spring seminar in Washington. In addition, the Foundation provides all Killam Fellows with a health insurance allowance. All Killam Fellows are also eligible to apply for a mobility (in-country travel) grant of up to $800 USD for educational field trips.
