Medical Student International Funding Opportunities

Value: Multiple grants of up to $1,500. This fund provides funding for 1st and 2nd year students participating in global health non-credit pre-clinical summer clinical electives (GH NPSCE) or 4th year students participating in global health clinical electives. Electives may occur at any approved international host institution. There are two application cycles in September and March. Value: Multiple awards of $1,000. Western International offers awards for international learning experiences including exchanges, study abroad programs, international field courses, summer programs, international service learning, field research, and more.

Value: 1-2 awards of up to $5,000. Award for 1st or 2nd year undergraduate medical or dental student to conduct a research project in global health. Projects may be in any area of basic, clinical, educational, or health services research. The majority of research projects will be expected to take place in another country. Projects within Canada will be considered if they are based on research that is concerned with health matters that are without borders and involve marginalized or at-risk, high priority populations e.g. prison health, health of those experiencing homelessness, aboriginal health, refugee health, etc.

The student requires a supervisor at Schulich and at an international host institution. For further information, contact the GROH Research Office at srop-srtp@schulich.uwo.ca 

Value: 1 award at $1,600. Annual award to a full-time MD student in any year, who is confirmed to be participating in a summer student project working with under-serviced or disadvantaged patient populations in Canada or abroad, as part of an existing student group participating in outreach work, or as an independent project. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established by a generous donation from the Hindmarsh Family through Foundation Western, and it qualifies for matching funds from the OTSS program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Value: 1 award at $1,250. Annual award to a 4th year student in the Windsor MD program, who will be pursuing a medical elective in a developing country. The award will be made prior to the student's departure. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established by Dr. David John Scarfone (MD '82) in honour of his mother Joan.

Value: 1 award at $100. Annual award to a 4th year MD student for elective work in a developing country. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established in memory of Andrew David Mason, who died while on elective in Nepal.

Value: 1 award at $1,750. Annual award to a 4th year MD student to assist with travel or program expenses related to an international global health elective experience. The elective should enable a medical student to observe first-hand the primary role of poverty in disease and the natural history of disease. The recipient will commit to a 4 to 6 week experience. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established by the friends and family of Dr. Rob Tingley (MD '95). Dr. Tingley's elective in Kijabe, Kenya (Oct 29-Dec 22, 1994) was a life-altering experience, and his friends and family have chosen to honour his legacy by enabling future students to have similar experiences.

Value: 1 award at $350. Annual award to a 4th year MD student who must show evidence of:

i) a keen interest in health advocacy activities by participating in the work of a local/national/international community organization for a minimum period of 4 weeks; or
ii) involvement in a local or national social cause to better a community or group of disadvantaged individuals over a minimum period of 4 weeks; or
iii) participation in an international global health elective in a developing country.

Additionally, the student must write a report post-elective. Applications for this award will be submitted in one of two formats: a CV from the applicant, or a nomination letter from a non-applicant nominating a specific undergraduate medical student. Both documents must reference specific advocacy activities completed by the intended recipient. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established by a generous gift from Dr. Carol Herbert and it will be conferred at the medical convocation ceremony each year.

Value: 1 award at $1,000.  Annual award to a 4th year MD student who has made a major contribution towards advancing the vision and mission of the Global Health Program within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and to the field of maternal, newborn or child health in a developing country; or has plans to pursue any one of these fields upon graduation. A call for nomination will be sent out. Candidates can self-nominate.

This award was established with a generous gift from the United Church Women of London Conference.

Value: 1 award at $2,000.  Awarded to a full-time undergraduate Medical student, with preference for a student in Year 3 or 4 who is participating in an international medical elective program. Preference will be given to a student doing an elective in internal medicine. Students must have completed their prescribed academic program the previous year and currently be registered in a full-time course load. Students may apply for this award in advance of being accepted into an elective program with receipt of the award contingent upon acceptance into the program. Students may only receive a Global Opportunities award once during their academic career at Western. Online applications are available on the Global Opportunities website, Western International. Students will be selected based on a combination of academic achievement, as well as a statement outlining how this experience will contribute to their development as a global citizen, what they expect to learn that will contribute to their success in medicine, and how they will be an effective Ambassador for Western.

Value: 2 awards at $2,000.  Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate Doctor of Medicine student in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who is participating in an international medical internship program. Students must have completed their prescribed academic program the previous year and currently be registered in a full-time course load. Students may apply for this award in advance of being accepted into an internship program with receipt of the award contingent upon acceptance into the program. Students may only receive a Global Opportunities award once during their academic career at Western. Online applications are available on the Global Opportunities website, Western International. Students will be selected based on a combination of academic achievement, as well as a statement outlining how this experience will contribute to their development as a global citizen, what they expect to learn that will contribute to their success in medicine, and how they will be an effective Ambassador for Western.

Value: 2 awards at $2,000.  Awarded annually to full-time undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who are participating in an international medical experience. Students must have completed their prescribed academic program the previous year and currently be registered in a full-time course load. Students may apply for this award in advance of being accepted into an international medical experience with receipt of the award contingent upon acceptance into the program. Students may only receive a Global Opportunities award once during their academic career at Western. Online applications are available on the Global Opportunities website, Western International.  Students will be selected based on a combination of academic achievement, as well as a statement outlining how this experience will contribute to their development as a global citizen, what they expect to learn that will contribute to their success in medicine, and how they will be an effective Ambassador for Western.
