Understanding Medical Education: New Book Chapter on Qualitative Research

We’re excited to highlight that the second edition of “Understanding Medical Education: Evidence, Theory, and Practice”, which was recently published by the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME; Edited by Dr. Tim Swanwick), contains a chapter on qualitative methodology authored by Dr. Stella Ng, Dr. Lorelei Lingard, and Dr. Tara Kennedy.

Dr. Ng, a former CERI Postdoctoral Fellow, is currently is the Director of Research, Centre for Faculty Development, St. Michael’s Hospital, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute; Education Scientist, Centre for Ambulatory Care Education, Women’s College Hospital; and Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto.

Dr. Kennedy, who completed her Doctorate with Dr. Lingard in 2008, is a Developmental Paediatrician and Clinical Leader, Paediatric Autism Rehabilitation Services, Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (Fredericton, Canada).

In their chapter, “Qualitative research in medical education: Methodologies and methods”, the authors present key perspectives regarding qualitative research including its paradigms and purposes, the relationship between qualitative and quantitative research, and detailed descriptions of methodologies inherent to the qualitative tradition.
