We are thrilled to share the exciting news of our first-ever Diwali celebration at Schulich Dentistry on November 9, 2023. This remarkable event, initiated by Dr. McDermott and brought to life by the passion and dedication of Kavita Khanna, a fourth-year dental student, marked a significant milestone in our community's cultural inclusivity.

The journey began when Dr. McDermott approached Kavita Khanna shortly after Diwali in 2021. As an international student experiencing homesickness during this major festival, Kavita recognized the shared sentiments among students from diverse backgrounds. Inspired by Dr. McDermott's support, she envisioned a platform to bring together students who, like her, felt a sense of nostalgia during festive occasions. This realization led to the creation of the Multicultural Committee, a dynamic group committed to fostering a sense of belonging for every student away from home, regardless of cultural background.

Fast forward to November 9, 2023, and our inaugural Diwali event proved to be a resounding success with the contribution of all the members of Diwali working group. Approximately 180 individuals from the Schulich Dentistry community participated, including esteemed faculty members and the President of the RCDSO. The occasion was graced with the presence of many respected personalities who appreciated the significance of embracing cultural diversity within our professional family.

Kavita Khanna, overwhelmed with joy, expressed, "It's awesome to be part of a dental family that celebrates diversity. I'm delighted to contribute to creating an inclusive environment in dentistry where everyone feels welcome and valued." It's really nice to see how Diwali brings us all together, no matter where we're from. It helps us connect and feel like one big Schulich family, even with all our different backgrounds.
