Professionalism Sculpture

The sculpture was created by sculptor J.A. Fligel. It consists of the images of Hippocrates and seven Canadian physicians. The wording on the sculpture is a quote by Sir. William Osler, often perceived as the father of modern medicine. "The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade, a calling, not a business, a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head." In addition, there are the words, "Components of Professionalism, Altruism, Compassion, Empathy, Integrity, Responsibility and Respect."

Professionalism embodies not only a high degree of medical competence, but also an adherence to high ethical and moral standards and the provision of timely compassionate care.

This sculpture was donated by the Medicine Class of 1966. The sculpture was dedicated to the preservation of medical professionalism on the celebration of the 50th anniversary of graduation on September 29, 2016.

In 1966, the Class was known as the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Medicine Class of 1966.
