Campus update – Suspension of university sanctioned international travel

The Government of Canada has issued a global travel advisory as of December 15, to avoid all non-essential travel outside of the country. As a result, and in compliance with our Safety Abroad Policy, Western has once again suspended all outbound international university-sanctioned student travel until further notice.

University-sanctioned international travel refers to any activities involving travel outside of Canada that have been approved, authorized, and/or supported by a Western University, department, unit, staff and/or faculty member.

We have communicated with students who are registered within Western International programs for international experiences in winter term 2022. We are working on a case-by-case basis to support them, and collaborating with colleagues at Ivey, Law, Brescia, Huron and King’s who are providing similar messaging and support to affected students.

Students participating in research, practica, field work, faculty or other program-based initiatives who planned on travelling abroad during the winter 2022 term should work directly with their program coordinators, supervisors, or academic units to explore alternative options. These could include postponing travel to a later date, cancelling the activity, or undertaking the activity remotely if possible.

If there are exceptional circumstances for travel plans in the winter 2022 term, which are considered to be academically essential, there is a Special Authorization to Travel form that can be completed. Please contact travelregistry@uwo.ca as soon as possible to discuss individual situations, and we will provide recommendations accordingly.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on international travel for the Summer 2022 term when they are available.

Schulich medicine and dental students who have further questions should contact our office at internationalization@schulich.uwo.ca
