Shoulder Surgery Fellowship Program

The Shoulder Fellowship at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University will provide the surgeon with an intensive one-year clinical and research experience designed to focus on all aspects of shoulder pathology. The candidate will benefit from the combined practices of two major clinical teaching units currently training both residents and fellows, and from exposure to a wide range of shoulder problems and their surgical solutions.

Fellowship Dates and Duration:

  • Fellowships are twelve months in duration, typically from August 1 to July 30 of the following year
  • There are generally 2 positions offered

Stipend: $50,000 Canadian annually

Holidays/Time Away: Four weeks, including time away at meetings are allotted as paid vacation time.

Health Benefits: These are not included. For international fellows, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) comes into effect at 3 months. The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is available in the interim. See the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) website for more information.

Fellowship Description:

Candidates will spend nine months at assisting in the care of patients in the clinic, operating room and inpatient ward at the Roth|McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre and three months at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic. Protected research time will be allocated during each clinical rotation and a project of publishable quality is expected at the completion of the fellowship. Decisions regarding research topic will be made at the beginning of the year using the resources of the participating labs. Fellows will be expected to participate in a variety of related academic activities, such as medical student and resident teaching, preparation of rounds/conferences and manuscript review preparation etc. and to present his/her work at the “Annual Orthopaedic Fellows Research Day” held each May or June.

Application Deadline:

December 31st for a program start two years following (ie. December 31, 2020 for an August 1, 2022 start). Fellows’ selection will be in mid February, selected fellows will be invited for interviews.

Research:

A large volume of cases provides an excellent base for research and fellows are expected to complete at least one project to be ready for publication by the end of the fellowship. There are resources and potential for research in a variety of areas. Two strong areas of expertise are clinical outcome studies and applied biomechanics. Research initiatives are supported by a staff of research assistants and an increasingly comprehensive database.
