Dr. George Athwal Introduces Revolutionary New Mixed Reality Technology for Shoulder Replacements

St. Joseph’s is one of two centres in the world to debut the revolutionary next step in mixed reality technology for shoulder replacement surgery that can track surgical instruments in real time and precisely point the way for surgeons. With this latest evolution of technology, a 3D representation of the patient’s anatomy and shoulder implant – similar to a hologram - is overlaid on the surgical site, giving the surgeon the sci-fi superpower of X-ray vision while operating. The Order of Ontario - the province's highest honour - recognizes outstanding people who have made exceptional contributions to help build a stronger province, nation and world. Dr. Joy MacDermid’s research in the 1990s and subsequent global workshops brought patient-reported outcomes into the decision-making process for the first time. Congratulations to Dr. Assaf Kadar for winning a Western Bone and Joint Institute Catalyst Program Grant. Dr. Assaf Kadar was funded for his project “3-Dimentional Ultrasound - a Novel Diagnostic tool for Flexor Tendon Injury.” Flexor tendon lacerations, partial or complete, are common and challenging injuries to treat. There is currently no readily available imaging modality to diagnose flexor tendon injury and such an ability might have a significant effect on treatment and outcome of these detrimental injuries. Our cadaveric research will examine the accuracy of 3DUS in diagnosing these injuries and compare to MRI.Dr. Jim Johnson Receives an Arthritis Society of Canada research grant.
