Dr. Burrell is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. Dr. Burrell’s main area of expertise is curriculum development and innovation within Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). In 2022 she completed a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Maastricht University.  

At the local level, Dr. Burrell is a member of the Academy of Educators and as a leader in Geriatric Medicine for UME has integrated geriatric competencies across the four-year UME curriculum. She is a week lead in the Foundations of Medicine and Transition to Clerkship courses, sitting on multiple course curriculum committees. She is a member of the UME Assessment Committee and is dedicated to strengthening the program of assessment at Schulich. She is also the Interprofessional Education Lead for UME, developing novel approaches to integrating interprofessional competencies into the curriculum. 

On a national level, Dr. Burrell is the vice-chair of the Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS) Education Committee and was a working group member in the development of the CGS Aging Care 5Ms Competencies for Graduating Medical Students that have been disseminated to schools of medicine and are being used by the Medical Council of Canada to update the Examination Objectives. Her membership on the Royal College Specialty Committee in Geriatric Medicine has extended her educational reach into postgraduate training. 

Dr. Burrell is actively engaged in education research and is an invited Affiliate of the Centre for Education Research & Innovation at Schulich. She is a strong mentor to trainees and early career clinicians interested in Geriatric Medicine and has led the local and national Geriatric Interest Group for medical students and residents.
