About the program


Pathologists' Assistants are essential to surgical and autopsy pathology. As a program graduate, you'll become a central part of patient care and medical research, ensuring quality control in laboratories, contributing to accurate diagnoses, monitoring clinical histories and managing staff. You'll learn to perform detailed microscopic examinations of surgical specimens, assist with autopsies and document findings and manage laboratory operations. As a graduate of the program, you’ll be eligible to take American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification Examination as well as the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists’ Assistants (CCCPA) certification exam.

Extensive on-site learning

Learners will undergo extensive on-site learning in London, Toronto, and Kitchener totalling ten months, and complete a two-month placement at an affiliated community hospital in Ontario.

Six terms (two years)

  • Application deadline - March 15 annually

Requirements

  • Educational background: Four-year undergraduate degree (science background preferred). Applicants with an MSc degree in one of the named disciplines will also be considered, as well applicants with MD, DDS or MBBS degrees.
  • Grade requirement: Minimum academic average of 80% during the final two years.
  • English language proficiency: Minimum scores and conditions vary for each test, such as a TOEFL score of 90 with specific speaking requirements or an IELTS score of 7. Click here for full details

Recommended courses

  • Undergraduate courses in English (with significant essay writing).
  • Anatomy, histology, microbiology and physiology are strongly recommended.
  • If physiology hasn’t been completed before admission, students must take Physiology 2130 in their first year.
  • Additional suggested courses include biochemistry, biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and calculus.
  • Please note that the courses listed above are recommended and not required
