The Leaders in Practice awards, organized by dental practice network dentalcorp, recognize dental professionals whose work has had a significant impact on the lives of Canadians – their patients, colleagues and students.

Dr. Les Kalman, Assistant Professor, Restorative Dentistry, was this year’s Winning Professor of Dentistry award recipient. He received the award in commendation of his work as an educator  and the Academic Lead of Continuing Dental Education at the School. His past leadership within the School’s Dental Outreach Community Service (DOCS) program, and subsequent commitment to instilling values of social responsibility and community engagement in the dental curriculum, were also recognized.

“It’s always uplifting to meet a graduate at a dental conference or meeting, and have that individual express their gratitude for your teaching,” Kalman said in his profile on the Leaders in Practice website.

Caroline Alpert, Dentistry Class of 2021, was named the 2020 Winning Student of Dental Medicine. Alpert is a passionate student with a strong on-campus presence, holding executive positions with the Student Professionalism & Ethics Association, Schulich Health & Wellness, Alpha Omega, Schulich Women in Dentistry Student Association and Schulich's Movember Team. She hopes to one day become a dental educator, inspired by her own professors and mentors at the School.

“I want to share everything that I have learned, have a profound impact on others, and help others achieve high standards of excellence in care.” she said.

While a shortlist of nominees for the awards was decided on by the Leaders in Practice Board of Directors, recipients were chosen through a publicly-available online poll. As award recipients, Kalman and Alpert each receive $5,000 and a one-page feature profile in the Oral Health Journal.
