Traveling Through the Professions

On Saturday, November 16, second year dental students Alicia Gordon and Zahava Bagola represented Schulich Dentistry at the Traveling Through the Professions workshop at the Fanshawe College Open House. The workshop focused on Interprofessional Education and Practice, and brought together students representing several professions from Western, Fanshawe, and the University of Waterloo. The workshop employed a simulation to build on and expand students’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities of different professions, and how they could work collaboratively to provide integrated care for patients in the Ontario health system.

All second year dentistry students participated in a similar workshop organized by Dr. Shawn Steele and Ms. Lara Timler on November 12, which united dental students from Western University and hygiene students from Fanshawe College to develop their interprofessional collaboration through a role clarity activity and the completion of a case study.

Upcoming interprofessional education and collaboration events include Interprofessional Education (IPE) day on Monday, March 9, 2020. IPE day is an interprofessional education workshop that is part of second year dentistry students’ curriculum this year. The workshop will gather students from a variety of health care-related professions from different institutions. Students will learn about collaborative health care teams and what interprofessional collaboration can mean for patient-centred outcomes.
