Summary

Dr. Cobos is a dentist with residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology working under an Academic Licence at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is the current Chair of the Oral Radiology Division within the Dental School. He teaches Oral Radiology both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is passionate about creating innovative teaching tools and currently involved in multiple scholarly research projects.

His research interests are mainly focused on improving image quality for Cone Beam CT imaging systems. This is accomplished by reducing image artifacts and better understanding the effects of system's geometry and reconstruction algorithms. Other areas of research include reporting outputs of AI software in oral radiology and developing frameworks to assess these outcomes in a comprehensive way to ensure fairness and prevent unwanted biases. Finally, Dr. Cobos is very active in the development of novel and creative research methods for any 3D medical or dental imaging modality, including digital formats used in 3D printing and digital dentistry.

List of current research opportunities:

Short-term Research Projects (< 1 year part-time)
Designed for undergrad summer students, honors students, project-based courses, etc. Additionally, some small research projects are also available for long term collaborators (Early career researchers, post-docs, and graduate students)

Master’s Level Projects (~ 2 years full-time)
Dr. Cobos is cross appointed with the departments of Medical Biophysics, and Anatomy and Cell Biology. Students are encouraged to setup an in-person or online meeting to discuss their long-term goals and describe their research interests. These projects would take a minimum of 2 years of full-time commitment. If you are interested in pursuing a career as a research clinician these projects would also be a great opportunity.
