Toxicology

Ian Ball MD

The LHSC bedside toxicology service was initiated in December 2014.

It is intended to complement the Ontario-Manitoba Poison Center’s advice for patients who are felt to have sustained any toxicologic exposure. Ideal consults are undifferentiated cases that present to the emergency department, and all critically ill toxicologic patients. We are not an admitting service, but will assess consults promptly, provide advice to the primary service, and review cases with the Poison Center to ensure messaging consistency.

The service is staffed by trainees in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as Adult Critical Care Medicine. Trainees are supervised by staff toxicologists. As the service becomes more developed, there is the potential to include adult emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, and pediatric critical care medicine trainees.

The service is available at Victoria Hospital only, on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
