Hofer J, Scavone B. Controversies in Obstetreic Anesthesia and Analgesia [Review]. Anesthesiology. 2013; 118: 761-2.

In a recent issue of Anesthesiology, Jennifer Hofer, MD, and Barbara Scavone, MD, of the University of Chicago Medical Center, have published a glowing review regarding Dr. Ian McConachie's new textbook, Controversies in Obstetric Anesthesia and Analgesia. This 2013 text features the works of many of our department faculty members, including:

  • Cardiac Disease in Pregnancy (Chapter 2), by Dr. Indu Singh, Dr. Achal Dhir, and Dr. Ronit Lavi.
  • Epidural and Intrathecal Opiates and Outcome (Chapter 13), by Dr. Pravin Batohi, and Dr. John Parkin.
  • Fasting and Aspiration Prophylaxis in Labor and for Cesarean Section (Chapter 17), by Dr. Kevin Teague, and Dr. Shalini Dhir

In their review, Hofer and Scavone note that "Controversies in Obstetric Anesthesia and Analgesia is planned perfectly for its target audience. It is a teaching text for trainees and a quick refresher for experienced practitioners. In the Preface, a concise synopsis of the goals are identified, which are consistently met in each chapter" (Hofer 762).

The authors conclude that this text "has a permanent home in [their] hospital’s obstetric anesthesia workroom, accessible both to residents and attendings....and is a welcome addition to [the] practice" (Hoffer 762).
