In Memoriam: Dr. W. Wayne Weston

With sadness, we share the passing of Dr. W. Wayne Weston on August 15, 2026.
Wayne was a professor emeritus in the Department of Family Medicine at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Before his retirement, he was a full-time clinical academic.
He was a foundational figure in medical education at the School, particularly as a visionary for what became the Centre for Education Research & Innovation (CERI). Through his work in faculty development, his commitment to educational excellence, and his unwavering support of learners and colleagues, he helped shape generations of physicians and educators.
Born in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Wayne's family moved to Toronto, where he attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute. He then pursued medical education at the University of Toronto, earning his MD in 1964.
In 1969, he was part of a pioneering group of 12 family doctors who completed Canada's first-ever certification in family medicine, earning the credentials needed to practise as family physicians from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
He was a leader in patient-centred medicine, publishing more than 200 articles and book chapters, co-editing two books and delivering hundreds of presentations worldwide. His contributions earned him numerous honours, including four national teaching awards.
Wayne was also a husband and father of five chidren. As a lifelong photography enthusiast, he documented family milestones in thousands of photographs, which he lovingly transformed into birthday cards and annual family calendars.
He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, mentorship and service, and his influence will continue to be felt by generations of educators, clinicians, learners and leaders.
