In Memoriam: Dr. Henry Roukema

With sadness, we share the passing of Dr. Henry Roukema on January 28, 2026.  

Henry was an associate professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and a neonatologist at Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

He graduated from Western with his MD in 1987 and completed his paediatric residency in 1992. This was followed by a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the University of Toronto, where he later completed a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. 

Henry served as director of Nurseries and medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at LHSC, setting standards for quality health care for newborns and their families. He was also the co-director of the Neonatal Paediatric Transport Team and an integral member of the Maternal Newborn Child and Youth Network of Southwestern Ontario.

Throughout his career, he coached and mentored many aspiring neonatologists, and served as program director for neonatal-perinatal medicine from 1999 to 2003. 

He loved his work, but always put his family first. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends, golfing, travelling and cottaging. 

Henry was a cherished colleague and physician leader who leaves an enduring legacy. He will be remembered for his remarkable professional achievements and unwavering commitment to patients, families, learners and colleagues.
