He immigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1971 and joined the Department that same year. He practiced at St. Joseph’s Family Medical Centre and remained an active member of the Department until his retirement in 2006, at which time he was appointed professor emeritus.

Throughout his career, Gordon was deeply committed to family medicine education, clinical care and mentorship. He played a leadership role in postgraduate medical education and was widely recognized for his dedication to learners, colleagues and patients.

Gordon made significant contributions to family medicine provincially and nationally. He served as program director for family medicine from 1986 to 2001, the longest-serving postgraduate director in Canada at the time. He also held several leadership roles, including President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians (1992–1993) and served on the Board of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He was widely recognized for his commitment to teaching and was a perennial recipient of Western's honours teaching award.

When Gordon wasn’t practising medicine, he could be found on the links at Sunningdale golf course, woodworking in his workshop or reading one of his treasured books.
