Announcement: Dr. Habib Rehman Khan named inaugural Chair in Cardiovascular Clinical and Translational Research

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Habib Rehman Khan has been appointed as the inaugural Chair in Cardiovascular Clinical and Translational Research at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, effective February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2031.

Dr. Khan is an Assistant Professor in the Heart Rhythm Program in the Division of Cardiology of the Department of Medicine at Schulich Medicine and Dentistry. He received his medical degree at the University of Peshawar in Pakistan and completed his postgraduate internal medicine training in Ireland and the United Kingdom, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

He completed his cardiology training in England and then subspecialized in adult cardiac electrophysiology with a two-year fellowship in Nottingham, England and a further two-year fellowship at London Health Sciences Centre and Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. His clinical interests revolve around conduction system pacing, atrial fibrillation ablation, SVT and inherited cardiac conditions. Dr. Khan is passionate about clinical research and pursued further training by obtaining a PhD at Imperial College London, England.

Dr. Khan is currently the principal investigator/co-investigator for 49 active studies in London, Ont. His research focuses on evaluating atrial function using multimodality imaging in patients with atrial fibrillation, autonomic dysfunction and cardiac arrhythmias. His other research interests include advanced management of conduction tissue disease using HIS Bundle pacing, left bundle area pacing and cardiac resynchronization therapy. He is the lead of the Inherited Cardiac Conditions service and participates in extensive research collaborations with the Hearts in Rhythm Organization (HIRO) network across Canada. He is the Director of Research for the Cardiac Electrophysiology group and encourages collaboration and design of studies from the research office.

Over his practicing career, Dr. Khan has published over 160 abstracts and manuscripts and presented at international conferences, including ESC, AHA, BCS, HRS and CHRS. He is a reviewer in established journals such as JACC, Heart Rhythm, PACE, Cardiac Electrophysiology and JAMC, was Junior Editor for EHJ Case Reports and is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Khan has co-supervised a PhD student from medical biophysics and is currently supervising and mentoring medical students, undergraduate students, cardiology fellows and electrophysiology fellows.

As the inaugural Chair in Cardiovascular Clinical and Translational Research, Dr. Khan’s vision is to refine management strategies for all cardiovascular diseases, build integrated networks and develop the next generation to position Western as a leading hub for cardiovascular clinical trials and translational research.
