Extension announcement: Charles Alexander McKenzie, PhD as Acting Chair, Department of Medical Biophysics

I am pleased to announce that Charles McKenzie’s, PhD, appointment as Acting Chair, Department of Medical Biophysics, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, has been extended.

The continued appointment will be effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, or until a permanent Chair is appointed, whichever occurs first.

Dr. McKenzie received a BSc in Physics (Honours) from the University of British Columbia in 1993, followed by a PhD in Medical Biophysics from Western in 1999 which was supervised by Frank Prato, PhD, and Dick Drost, PhD. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2001.

Dr. McKenzie returned to Western in 2007 when he joined the Department of Medical Biophysics as an Associate Professor.  He was a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Translational Magnetic Resonance Imaging from 2007-2017. His research has focused on the application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to understanding fetal and placental development and disease, particularly in the setting of maternal obesity. His research has been supported by a variety of funding bodies, including the United States National Institutes of Health, the Ontario Research Fund, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

While serving as acting leader, Dr. McKenzie looks forward to advancing the Department’s operations and fostering its continued success.
